DescriptionThree-gallon, buff-colored, salt-glazed stoneware butter churn with a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The churn has a flared rim, raised band at the neck, cylindrical body that tapers slightly from bottom to top, and a flat bottom. Two pulled lug handles have been applied to the jar just below the flared rim and raised band; the handles are pressed against the churn along their full length. Hand-painted circles of cobalt blue decorate the area where the ends of the handles meet the body of the churn. At one side, between the handles and below the raised band, is the impressed number "3". There are slight changes in the color of the glaze, from clear at the top to a light brown near the bottom sides. There is a large crack in the churn running from the rim to the right of one of the handles, half way down the side of the churn, ending in a shorter horizontal crack. There are also three chips in the rim, each with some glaze on the chip itself.
