DescriptionRound, ovoid, small-mouthed stoneware jar with a reddish-brown salt glaze on the exterior and a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The jar has a round, flat foot, and sides that gradually widen, then narrow at the shoulder, and widen again above the neck to form a plain, standing rim. A ledge on the interior of the rim supported a lid, which is now missing. There are two impressed bands circling the jar just below the rim. The jar has two pulled lug handles. The handles are pressed against the jar along their full length, attaching completely to the side of the jar just below the neck. A maker's mark, "D. GOODALE/ HARTFORD", is stamped once, to one side of the jar, between the handles. Cobalt blue has been applied at the base of each of the handles and over the maker's mark. There is one large chip and crack on the exterior of the rim, and several small cracks on the inside of the rim at the ledge. There is one small chip in one of the handles.
