DescriptionFour gallon, wide-mouthed stoneware jar or crock with a salt glaze on the exterior and a brown slip glaze, or Albany type glaze, on the interior. The jar/crock has a flat bottom and cylindrical sides that end in a flat, rolled rim. Two delicate, pulled, lug handles are located on opposite sides. On one side, between the handles, is a maker's mark, "SEYMOUR & BOSWORTH/ HARTFORD.CONN/ 4". The mark has been hand-painted with cobalt blue, and there is a large cobalt blue design below this. It consists of a lengthy bird standing on a tall branch. The glaze and cobalt blue have been thickly applied to the jar/crock, resulting in a highly textured surface. The thickest parts of the glaze and decoration are crazing. There is a crack beneath the tail of the bird, and four chips around the bottom of the jar/crock.
