DescriptionCylindrical, four gallon stoneware jar or crock with a salt glaze on the exterior and interior. The jar/crock has a flat base and cylindrical sides that end in a slightly thicker, flat rim. The jar/crock has two pulled, applied, crescent-shaped handles, located on opposite sides. On one side of the jar/crock, between the handles and just below the rim, is a mark, "S RISLEY/ NORWICH". Below this is a hand-painted cobalt blue design consisting of three circles, perhaps representing berries or fruit, on a stem. Below this is the date, "1847", and then the number ,"4", indicating capacity.

There are two significant cracks on the jar/crock. The first, located to the right of the mark, near the handle, is very wide and continues from the rim down through the bottom of the jar/crock. The second, located to the left of the mark, is smaller, but runs from the rim down the side of the jar/crock. A single piece of wire (perhaps iron) circles the jar/crock just below the rim. There is a chip in one of the handles.
