DescriptionCylindrical, five gallon, wide-mouthed stoneware jar or crock with a salt glaze on the exterior and a brown slip glaze on the interior. The jar/crock has a flat bottom and cylindrical sides that rise to a flattened, rolled rim. Two pulled lug handles are attached on opposite sides of the jar/crock. The handles are pressed against the jar/crock along their full length, attaching completely to the jar/crock about an inch below the rim. On one side, between the handles and just below the rim, is an impressed mark, "O. H. SEYMOUR/ HARTFORD/ 5". The mark is decorated with a limited amount of cobalt blue. Just below the mark, the individual who decorated the jar/crock, hand-wrote in cobalt blue, "Grant/ President/ 2d Term/ 1873". A short, dashed line is drawn just below the date.

There is crazing over all the exterior glazed surfaces of the jar, and several chips in the brown slip glaze on the interior. Several areas of the glaze on the exterior of the jar/crock have flaked off, most notably where the cobalt blue words decorate the side.
