DescriptionRound plate, with a lightly scalloped rim, made of buff-colored earthenware with a light blue-tinted glaze, a type of ceramic known as pearlware. The plate is decorated with an overglaze transfer-printed, dark red enamel pattern. The pattern, titled, "Canova", shows a red urn sitting on a low, square pedestal, slightly to the right of center. On the left, a boat is floating in a body of water, and several buildings with peaked roofs are on the shore in the middle distance. Trees, ferns, and foliage decorate the landscape between the buidings, water, and urn. The pattern is surrounded by a brief area of white, then a border of pointed arches and geometric floral embellishments. The border on the rim of the plate consists of eight panels of two different alternating designs. One design has a red background with a line of flowers, and the other design shows an urn on a pedestal with a boat floating in water to the right. There is light crazing over all the surfaces of the plate. A spot of green (possibly underglaze) is located on the rim, just to the lower right of the urn.

MarkingsThere is one mark on the bottom of the plate: a red, overglaze, transfer-printed mark consisting of a heraldic griffin standing over an oval scrolled cartouche, with the pattern name, "CANOVA", inside.
