DescriptionThree round plates, each with a lightly scalloped rim, made of buff-colored earthenware with a light blue-tinted glaze, a type of ceramic known as pearlware. The plates are decorated with an overglaze, transfer-printed, red enamel pattern. The pattern, titled, "Canova", shows a red urn sitting on a low, square pedestal, with a round building on a hill in the distance. On the right, a boat is floating in a body of water, and a building with a portico is on the shore in the distance. Trees, ferns, and foliage decorate the landscape between the buidings, water, and urn. The pattern is surrounded by a brief area of white, then a border of pointed arches and geometric floral embellishments. The border on the rim of each plate consists of eight panels of two different alternating designs. One design has a red background with a line of flowers, and the other design shows an urn on a pedestal with a boat floating in water to the right. Plate .3 was not printed as dark as the other plates.

All three plates have light crazing on the rim and edges of the rim. Plate .4 has additional crazing on all surfaces. The scalloped rim on each plate has accumulated scratches and dirt.

MarkingsThere are two marks on the bottom of each plate: a red, overglaze, transfer-printed mark consists of a heraldic griffin standing over an oval scrolled cartouche, with the pattern name, "CANOVA", inside. Below is the name and location of the manufacturer, "T. MAYER/ STOKE UPON TRENT"; also an impressed mark of "T. MAYER/ STOKE".
Additionally, plates .3 and .4 have a red, overglaze, transfer-printed mark of the number "3" or "5". Plate .5 probably had a similar mark at one time.
