DescriptionRectangular earthenware platter with canted corners and an underglaze transfer-printed border and design in medium blue. The pattern, titled, "Pompeii", shows a tall, elaborately decorated urn in the center, with a smaller urn to the left. A third urn sits on top of the capital of a column and is located in the background, to the right of the central urn. All of the urns are surrounded by flowers, either large or small, sprouting from the ground. The border, covering the rim of the platter, shows groups of five flowers evently spaced between oval or irregularly shaped medallions.

There is slight crazing all over the platter and a few light scratches in the pattern to the right of the central urn. A few spots of minor discoloration are located on the surface of the platter.

MarkingsThe bottom of the platter has three labels: an impressed maker's mark, "J & G Alcock/ COBRIDGE"; a blue transfer-printed retailer's mark, "POMPEII/ JAMES TAMS & CO/ PHILADELPHIA"; and a blue transfer-printed mark consisting of the number "7" and the number "1" (the number one may simply be a line, the intention is unclear).
