DescriptionLarge rectangular ironstone platter with canted corners and a transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue border and pattern, with the title, "Baronial Halls" indicated on the maker's mark. The pattern, printed in the center of the platter, shows two knights in armor jousting on horseback. In the foreground on either side, several knights in armor and pages watch the spectacle. The knights are jousting on the lawn in front of a large stone structure, perhaps a castle or manor. The building has many crenellated towers and arched doorways and windows, all in the Gothic style. The structure is surrounded by a low stone wall, and there is a river in the far left background. The pattern is surrounded by an area of white, then a basketweave border at the rim. The inside edge of the border has small pointed arches, and the outside edge of the border has a line of small trefoils, both suggesting the Gothic style. There are many light scratches on the surface of the platter and two spots of light brown discoloration. Minor scratches cover the foot of the platter.

MarkingsThere is one printed, blue maker's mark on the bottom of the platter. It consists of a shield with the pattern name and manufacturer name, "BARONIAL/ HALLS/ T J & J Mayer/ LONGPORT". The shield is surrounded by medieval accoutrements: a powder horn, axe, helmet, flyswatter, spiked ball and chain, etc. There is also one impressed mark of the letter "B".
