DescriptionTwo men stand facing each other in the interior of a room. They wear coats, vests, neckties, trousers, and shoes. Both wear sashes with rosettes on them. One sash also has a device of crossed mallets on it. One man has a beard. The other has sideburns. His hand rests on a book, probably a Bible, which is on a table covered with a tablecloth. An armchair is at the left. A window with drapery is in the left background. The base of a column is visible behind additional drapery at the right. This drapery is trimmed with fringe. A framed painting of a landscape with a waterfall and patterned wallpaper are on the wall. Patterned carpet is on the floor.

InscribedOn recto, lithographed title beneath image, "RECHABITES. / TEMPERANCE FORTITUDE AND JUSTICE. / But they said We will drink no wine for Jonadah the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever. Jer. 35 Chap. 6 Ver. / 281."
