DescriptionA woman sits in an elaborate carved chair at a round table in the interior of a room. She wears a dress with a large lace collar or bertha. She has a bracelet on her right wrist, a rose in her hair, and another rose at her breast. A young boy wearing a tight-fitting jacket stands beside her. They are reading an open book, probably a Bible, which rests on a stand on the table. Also on the table are a closed book, an oil lamp, and a glass vase of flowers, probably roses. A patterned carpet is on the floor. Trees are visible through an open window that is framed by drapery with fringe and a tieback.
