DescriptionA battle is taking place between cavalry charging from the left and infantry advancing from the right. A horse has fallen with his rider beneath him and another dead or wounded man nearby. At the right, two men suport a wounded officer. Men in military uniforms hold swords, flags, and rifles or muskets with fixed bayonets. A cannon is in the right background. Much of the background is hidden by smoke from artillery fire. A high hill or mountain and palm trees are in the distance.

General Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) commanded 2900 American troops, and 6000 Mexican troops fought under General Arista. The Mexicans were driven from the ground with great loss.
