DescriptionMan's shirt of white linen, with a whipped ruffle of finer quality linen (a "jabot") around the center front opening, which extends nine inches. The collar is 4 1/4 inches wide and is meant to stand up (it is pieced on the inside). The collar fastens with two ball-shaped, thread-covered buttons (one is missing). The shirt body is cut as a long rectangle, folded across the shoulders (which look seamed due to decorative stitching). The sleeves are gathered at the shoulder and are gusseted under the arm. They are gathered into 1 3/4-inch-wide cuffs, which are worked with opposing buttonholes to accommodate a stud. The side seams are open for about ten inches from the bottom; the top of the opening is gusseted. The base of the center front opening is reinforced with a heart-shaped piece of fabric on the back, decoratively embroidered on the front with French knots. The shoulders are lined with self-fabric.
