The shirt has a 3 1/4-inch-high standing collar, with a rounded notch in front to accommodate the chin. The front of the shirt is inset with a 16 1/2 x 12 1/2 inch plastron of linen. The center front opening extends the length of the plastron and is edged with a three-inch-wide whipped ruffle ("jabot") on each side. The ruffle is made of very fine linen. The opening fastens with four mother of pearl buttons. The armscyes are reinforced with a 3 1/2-inch-wide lining. The sleeves are slightly full; they are eased into the shoulder and gathered into the linen cuff, which fastens with a single mother of pearl button. The shirt is lined across the back of the shoulders for a depth of about eight inches. The side seams are open from the bottom edge about ten inches; the top of the opening is reinforced with a gusset. The body of the shirt is slightly tapered at the waist.
