NotesSubject Note: Winfield Scott was appointed general in chief of the army in 1841. He gained lasting renown during the Mexican War. In 1852 he achieved the rank of Lieutenant General, the first to do so since George Washington. He remained in command at the start of the Civil War, retiring at the end of 1861.
