DescriptionA man in military uniform rides a horse down a stone stairway between rocky cliffs. He wears a hat with a plume, a jacket with epaulets, and boots. He holds a sword. The horse wears a saddle, bridle, and a fringed saddle blanket. Smoke from the muskets of a line of soldiers with a British flag is at the upper left. A church with a steeple is on the hill at the right. Trees are in the background.

In 1775, Israel Putnam was appointed to major general in the American Revolutionary Army. He was born in Massachusetts and died in Pomfret (Brooklyn), Connecticut.
