Barnard Park was originally called South Green, and started as a common, used for grazing cattle and military drills. It was fenced in and graded in the early 1800s. In the 1860s, plans by Jacob Weidenmann were used to make it into a public space with crisscrossing paths, ornamental trees, and a double serpentine cast-iron fence. In 1898, the green was renamed Barnard Park in honor of Henry Barnard, who lived across the street.
