DescriptionPetticoat of cream-colored, fine wool flannel. The petticoat is flat in front and pleated across the center back. Midway down the length of the petticoat in the back, an extra panel of flannel is gathered across to create more fullness. The bottom edge of the petticoat is scalloped and finished with a buttonhole stitch in cream-colored silk floss. Above this, a meandering "coral" pattern is created with narrow silk braid. The waistband is plain cotton, one-inch-wide. The petticoat opens at center back.

NotesHistorical Note: According to a letter written by the donor (see object file 1972.19.2), his great grandmother was Elizabeth Howard Whitman (Mrs. Samuel Whitman, Jr.) (1786-1852). She died too early for this petticoat to have belonged to her, but she may been the mother of the Elizabeth Whitman who owned it.
