DescriptionSummer spread with an appliqué Connecticut State Seal. The summer spread consists of a plain-woven cotton and linen (or all cotton) ground with a red printed plain-woven calico appliqué. At the top is a cross-stitched inscription: "CHARLOTTE RAYMOND MONTVILLE AD 1808". The appliqué pattern consists of three grape vines in the center, each emerging from a basket. Below the basket is a hand-stitched cross stitch motto in black thread: "BY HUMILTY AND THE FEAR OF THE LORD ARE RICHES AND HONOUR AND LIFE". This is surrounded by four concentric oval borders: a border of triangles pointed inward, a border of individual flowers, a border of triangles pointed outward, and a border of flowers and leaves on a vine. Each side of the summer spread has a border of triangles pointed inward. There are two appliquéd flowers at the upper left and right corners of the summer spread. The lower corners of the summer spread are rounded.

The summer spread is constructed of three panels of fabric, each about twenty-nine inches wide. The edges are finished back to front, and tucked under the appliqué border at each side. Each of the cross-stitched areas are hand-stitched onto a separate piece of plain-woven cotton and linen then appliquéd onto the summer spread.

Condition: The summer spread is in good condition with overall minor yellowing and staining. There are areas of darker brown stains at the lower right corner and at the center right side.
