DescriptionPieced quilt in a Star of Bethlehem pattern. The quilt consists of a pieced top of hand-stitched plain-woven cotton, batting, and a white plain-woven cotton backing; the three layers are joined with a hand-stitched quilting pattern. The star is constructed of concentric rings of diamond-shaped pieces of white, red and blue cotton. At each corner of the star are three, red over blue appliqué flames. Each side of the quilt has a red and blue triangular border. The quilting pattern on the white areas of the quilt consists of undulating vines with leaves, grapes on a vine, sprays of flowers, and a field of clamshells on a background of closely spaced diagonal lines. The quilting pattern on the red, blue and white cotton follows the shape of the piece. Each side of the quilt is edged with woven white tape binding.

Condition: The top and backing are lightly stained and yellowed.
Object number1963.36.2
NotesObject Note: Quilt attributed to Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Thompson of Turkey Hills, East Granby, Connecticut. According to tradition, Mr. Thompson cut the pieces for the quilt with his penknife, and then Mrs. Thompson sewed it.
