DescriptionAirplanes with United States insignis are preparing for take-off from an aircraft carrier in the ocean. Men in yellow shirts are giving hand signals and men in brown shirts are working on the wheels of the planes. A group of people are watching the preparations. Another aircraft carrier and a smaller ship are in the background.
NotesSubject Note: The Grumman Hellcat F6F was a carrier-based fighter aircraft developed to replace earlier fighters which had proved less maneuverable than the Japanese Zeros. The Hellcat first saw action on September 1, 1943, when F6Fs based on the USS Independence shot down a Japanese flying boat. They were used successfully against the Japanese until the end of World War II. Although Grumman ceased production of the Hellcat after the end of the war, some planes remained in use by other nations until the 1960s. (Finlay 4/1/2010)
