BiographyCaptain Samuel Smedley was born in Fairfield, Connecticut in March 1753, the son of Colonel James and Mary (Burr) Smedley. He married Esther Rowland. Smedley was a sea captain during the Revolution, commanding the brig Defence. After the war he was Collector of Customs for the Fairfield District, where he died in June of 1812.
