Colonel Thomas SeymourAmerican, 1735 - 1829

Colonel Thomas Seymour was born to Hephzibah and Thomas Seymour in Hartford in 1735. He graduated from Yale College in 1755 and worked as a lawyer. He was a Hartford representative to the General Assembly and also Lieutenant Colonel in the American Revolution, commanding three regiments in 1776. Thomas was the first mayor of Hartford from 1774-1812. He married Mary Ann Ledyard (1735-1807) in Hartford, Connecticut. His wife was the daughter of Captain John (1700-1771) and Deborah Youngs Ledyard (1705-1746/7), and the sister of Colonel William Ledyard, who was killed at the Battle of Fort Griswold on 6 September 1781. Mary Ann and Thomas had seven children: Captain Thomas Youngs (1757-1811); William (1758-1843); Edward (1762-1822); Major Henry (b. 1764); Mary Juliana (1769-1843); Col. Ledyard (b. 1773) and Samuel (b. 1775). Thomas died at age 94 in 1829 and is buried in Hartford’s Ancient Burying Ground.
