BiographyJames “Gene” Joseph Tunney was born on 25 May 1897 in New York City. He was a professional boxer who competed from 1915 to 1928. Tunney held the world heavyweight title from 1926-1928, and the American light heavyweight title twice between 1922 and 1923. He married Mary "Polly" Lauder (1907-2008) in 1928. The couple lived in Stamford, Connecticut. They had four children: John Varick Tunney (1934-2018), Jonathan Rowland Tunney, Gene Lauder Tunney (1931-2009), and Joan Tunney Wilkinson (1939-2008). Gene Tunney died on died on 7 November 1978 in Greenwich, Connecticut.
