BiographyIsabel "Belle" Geraldine Washington was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1908. She was a younger sister of American film actress Fredi Washington. Isabel followed in her sister's footsteps, having both lived and danced in Harlem, New York at the renowned Cotton Club.

Isabel married pastor and politician Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. between 1933 and 1934 at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City, and saw her husband through numerous career changes, including his election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The couple relocated to Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, an African American community in Martha's Vineyard, around 1937, where they likely lived until their divorce in 1945.

Isabel continued to live between Oak Bluffs and Harlem, and maintained a career in special education.

Isabel Geraldine Washington died in May 2007.
