DescriptionSixth plate daguerreotype of Lucy Abigail Brainard, probably made when Lucy was in her late teens or very early twenties. She is facing the camera straight on, her arms folded in her lap.
She is wearing a dress with a well-fitted, darted bodice, most likely over a stiff corset that flattened the bust. A row of buttons decorates the front of the bodice, which ends in a point. The armscye is cut higher than the low, sloped-shouldered silhouette of earlier in the 1840s. The long sleeves are quite close-fitting, and have caps trimmed with two rows of ruffles. The high neckline is finished with a white lace collar fastened with a brooch.
Lucy's hair is worn parted in the middle and fashioned into wings over her ears, the lobes of which are just visible.
