DescriptionOvoid, four gallon, stoneware lidded jar with a salt glaze on the exterior and brown slip glaze, or Albany-type slip glaze, on the interior. The jar (.a) has a flat bottom, gently swelled sides that narrow at the shoulder to form a narrow neck, and a slightly flared rim. A small ledge running around the inside of the rim supports a flat lid (.b). The lid is disc shaped, with a small disc-shaped finial in the center. It is covered on all surfaces with a salt glaze. An incised line circles the jar, about two inches below the neck. At this line, two pulled lug handles have been applied on opposite sides of the jar. Cobalt blue has been applied at the points where each handle connects with the body of the jar. On one side, between the handles is a maker's mark, "GOODWIN/ &/ WEBSTER/ 4". There are many small imperfections in the glaze and the surface of the stoneware; the bottom three inches of the jar are a light brown and do not give the appearance of being glazed. There are two larger and two smaller chips in the rim. Portions of the inside sides and bottom of the jar are coated with a compacted powdery substance.
