DescriptionLight blue ribbon (a) with bottom fringe which is attached at the top to a bar on a metal pin clasp with a celluloid front decoration. The decorative piece includes a picture of the Connecticut House at the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition with the date 1904 below the house and the name of the event printed in blue and red flanking the central picture. Hanging from the bottom of the central portion of the pin is a wooden nutmeg. Behind the nutmeg is a short ivory colored ribbon gathered at the bottom so there is a pleat, through which a metal ring has been threaded, and from that hangs a metal and celluloid (?) decorative medallion with the seal of Connecticut in the center flanked on the left by three American flags. The medallion has a pierced gold-toned frame. Printed on the ivory ribbon are the names Hooker and Haynes in script on either side of the nutmeg, and below is "CONNECTICUT / THE / CONSTITUTION / STATE" while below that is the name Ludlow, also in script. Printed on the blue ribbon below the medallion is a brief history of the state starting with "1639 / THE CONSTITUTION / BORN IN CONNECTICUT. / 1662 / CHARTER SECURED BY / JOHN WINTHROP. / 1687 / THE CHARTER HIDDEN IN THE OAK. / 1789 / UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION / ADOPTED ON / CONNECTICUT'S MODEL." Each date has an illustration: 1639 a scroll with the words "Fundamental orders"; 1687 an image of an oak tree; and below 1789 are crossed U.S. flags. The pin came slipped over a piece of cardboard tapered on one end to fit behind the pin clasp (b) and in a brown paper envelope with advertising for The Whitehead & Hoag Co. (c)

Markingsa. On the back of the hanging medallion is imprinted "W.H CO. NEWARK, N.J. / PAT. APPLD FOR". To the back of the ribbon a cardboard label has been attached. "THIS BADGE MANUFACTURED BY / The Whitehead & Hoag Co. / MAKERS OF / BADGES, BUTTONS, BANNERS, SIGNS / AND ADVERTISING NOVELTIES. / Main Office and Factor, - - NEWARK, N.J. / ALL GOOD GURANATEED UNION MADE." There follows a paragraphs with the list of the unions that were involved in the production of the badge and a union label. At the very bottom of the tag are the patent dates for the various parts. c. Printed on the front left of the envelope: THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO. / BADGES, / BUTTONS, FLAGS, BANNERS, SIGNS, AND / CELLULOID ADVERTISING NOVELTIES / MAIN OFFICE AND FACTORY, / WASHINGTON AND WARREN STREETS, / NEWARD, N.J., U.S.A." On the back of the envelope is printed a list of the patents covering the badges, from 1892 to 1897.
