DescriptionLarge, cylindrical, wide-mouthed stoneware jar or crock. The jar/crock has a salt glazed exterior and a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The straight sides of the jar/crock end in a plain, rolled rim. The jar/crock has two pulled lug handles located on either side. To one side, between the handles and immediately below the rim, is an impressed maker's mark, "S.L.PEWTRESS & CO/ FAIR HAVEN CONN." Cobalt blue has been applied over the mark. Below this is a tall bird, hand-painted in cobalt blue. The bird faces to the right and sits on a branch with wide, blue leaves. A large crack crosses the bottom of the jar; this crack is not visible on the inside.
