DescriptionThree-gallon, wide-mouthed, ovoid, grey stoneware jar with a salt glaze on the exterior and a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The jar has a rolled rim with two delicate, lug handles just below; the handles are pressed against the jar along their full length. Between the handles, on one side, is the impressed mark, "S.L.PEWTRESS&CO/ FAIR HAVEN CONN/ 3". A small amount of cobalt blue has been applied over the mark, however, the jar's primary decoration is below the mark. A hand-painted, thickly-applied cobalt blue design consists of an elongated bird standing on a leafy, stylized branch. There is some light crazing over all the exterior glazed surfaces of the jar, as well as some slight light brown discoloration as a result of the glazing and firing process. An unknown white substance has adhered to portions of the interior of the jar.
