DescriptionCast pewter flagon, part of a pewter Communion service consisting of a flagon (.1), three mugs (.2.1-.3), a baptismal basin (.3), and two patens (.4-.5). The flagon has a stepped-domed lid with a tall finial at the top, and a curved thumbpiece with a pierced, drop-shaped opening to one side. The finial contains a small knob over a disc. The lid is joined by a hinge to the top of the handle. The body of the flagon is cylindrical, with straight sides that are tapered slightly from bottom to top, over a flared base. Two bands of molding circle the body of the flagon, one below the rim and one at the top of the base. Each band consists of a slightly projecting curve with a fillet, or narrow flat section, above and below. At one side is an ear-shaped handle with a C-scroll at the bottom that extends into a curved terminal. The top of the handle has a scallop with a drop near the hinge. The exterior surface of the handle is flat, and the interior surface is rounded. The handle is cast and soldered to the body; a small oval-shaped plate is soldered between the bottom of the handle and the body of the flagon. An inscription is engraved opposite the handle, "LIEUT URIEL HOLMES'S/ Gift to/ HARTLAND CHURCH/ 1776".
The surface of the pewter that comprises the lid, the upper handle, and the flared base is rough and pitted. The body of the flagon is polished and has light scratches. The lid and base have active corrosion.
