DescriptionClaret jug made of blown colorless lead glass with a light grey tint. The thick and heavy glass claret jug has a plain rim that curves up to form a large spout, a narrow neck, a barrel-shaped body, and a flat bottom with a pontil mark in the center. A thick applied handle connects the rim and neck with the body. Beneath the spout is a small, rectangular, white paper label with a red border and serrated edge. A typed message on the label reads, "LEAD/ GLASS/ PITCHER/ 1639". There is a ring of light scratches and wear on the bottom edge of the claret jug, as well as a few scratches on the outside. The bottom tip of the handle has been reglued.

Pontil mark: A rough place on a blown glass object where the solid metal rod, or pontil, is cracked off the object after final shaping and decoration. Pontil marks can be polished to achieve a smooth surface.
