DescriptionWide, cylindrical, buff-colored stoneware butter crock and lid with blue and white decoration. The crock (.a) was decorated with underglaze cobalt blue applied with a sponge, a type of ceramic known as spongeware. A stamp was probably used to apply the word "BUTTER" inside a rectangular scalloped line with cobalt on the side of the crock. The lid (.b) has a knob-shaped finial with the same decoration as the body of the crock. Two shallow cracks appear on the inside of the crock, running a few inches down from the rim.
