DescriptionRound, hard paste porcelain teacup with hand-painted gilding and overglaze black enamel; the teacup Chinese export porcelain decorated with a technique called grisaille. The teacup is decorated with a cluster of two large black flowers with gilded highlights located on the side of the tea bowl. The remaining sides of the teacup are decorated with three, small evently spaced flowers. The outside rim of the teacup is decorated with four hand-painted flowers evenly spaced along a scalloped, dotted line. Above this are two straight lines with a dotted line between, creating the final border at the outside edge of the rim. The inside rim of the teacup is surrounded by a border of a dotted line, scalloped line, and straight line. The teacup has a small molded and applied handle opposite the main floral decoration. The gilded highlights on the teacup have mostly worn away; there were probably more highlights on the flowers and additional lines of gilding at the rim. There is one small chip on the inside edge of the rim and three small chips on the foot.
