DescriptionRound, hard paste porcelain dish with hand-painted overglaze black enamel and gilding, a technique of decorating ceramics known as grisaille; the dish is Chinese export porcelain. The dish has a loose group of various flowers hand-painted in black enamel, with gilded highlights. This is surrounded by an area of white, with a line of black enamel arrows at the inside of the rim. The edge of the rim is decorated with a border of gilding and black enamel in abstract geometric shapes and straight lines. The gilding and enamel in the center of the dish have worn away, probably the result of use over time. An off-white substance remains where the thicker clumps of enamel have worn away.
