Caption: HFP090305-9/3/58-NEW CANAAN, CONN.: The hero, 14 yr. old Anthony Marchand (R) of Greenwich, in rear seat while James Leroy Smith, 20, Washington, D.C., handcuffed in front seat of police cruisers, 9/3. Smith forced a taxi driver at gunpoint to take him from Baltimore to Connecticut "saying I want to see my wife in Stamford." The driver escaped at a Greenwich Toll station where the schoolboy was picked-up as a hostage. A wild chase followed to New Canaan where Marchand knocked Smith's gun aside as police moved in for the capture. UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL TELEPHOTO fl
