Caption: HFP090304-9/3/58-NEW CANAAN, CONN.: A wild ride from Baltimore ends for James Leroy Smith, 20, of Washington, D.C., in handcuffs at New Canaan. A taxi driver, Charles T. Smith, was forced to drive all night from Baltimore as J.L. Smith said "he was going to shoot his wife in Connecticut." The driver escaped at Greenwich where Smith picked up a hostage, Anthony Marchand, 14. Marchand deflected the kidnapper's aim when police moved in for the capture.
