Caption: HFP090301-9/3/58-NEW CANAAN, CONN.: 14 yr. old Anthony Marchand is credited with deflecting the aim of the man (identified by police as James Leroy Smith, 20, Washington, D.C.) as police closed in after a wild chase from Greenwich. Smith hired a taxi in Baltimore and forced the driver to Connecticut, "saying he was going to shoot his wife." The driver escaped at Greenwich and that is where J.L. Smith picked up Marchand as a shield, 9/3. UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL TELEPHOTO fl
