DescriptionA small town is on a low hill in the middle distance. In the foreground, in a field surrounded by a stone wall, three men load hay into a wagon drawn by oxen. Small piles of hay are arranged in regular rows at the right. Trees, possibly fruit trees, line the enclosure; a farmhouse and its outbuildings are in the right back corner. A rail fence separates the farmyard from the field. Buildings in the town include many additional houses, a barn, and a large church with a domed tower. A tall tavern or inn sign is visible in the right background, behind a tall elm tree. Other trees appear to be poplars. Additional fields and low wooded hills are in the distance.

NotesDate Note: The technique of this print resembles prints produced by E.C. Kellogg between 1852 and 1854, but appears to be more advanced. It was probably printed by E.B. & E.C. Kellogg shortly after the reorganization of the firm under that name in 1855-1856. (Finlay 1/19/2005)
