DescriptionWWII Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) uniform belonging to Helen Lister (1904-1999) of Devon, Milford, Connecticut. The uniform consists of (a) jacket, (b) U.S. Army Branch Insignia lapel pin, (c) Field Artillery Branch Insignia lapel pin, (d) World War II Victory Military Ribbon bar pin, (e) Army Good Conduct Military Ribbon bar pin, (f) bar pin with World War II American Campaign Military Ribbon and European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Military Ribbon, (g) shirt, (h) tie, (i) and pants.
(a) Jacket is a U.S. Army Olive Drab Wool Field Jacket Specification 437; this short hip-length, long sleeved jacket type is sometimes referred to as an “Ike Jacket.” The jacket was manufactured by the New Bedford Clothing Co. and constructed from 18 oz serge wool in Olive Drab shade 33 with a cotton liner of the same shade. The jacket has 4 pockets, 2 exterior and 2 interior breast pockets, and features the following closures: 14 total plastic buttons: 6 x front closure, 2 x 2 cuffs, 1 x 2 shoulder loops. 1 x 2 front pockets; one metal pressure snap at the waistband; and 2 metal buckle/strap adjusters, 1 at each hip. The jacket features the following patches: Honorable Discharge Emblem sewn over the proper right breast pocket, Enlistment Stripe and Overseas Service Bars on proper left sleeve at wrist, and, on the proper right shoulder, the Division Insignia for the 84th Infantry Division "Railsplitters" patch featuring a white axe splitting a rail on a red ground.
(b) US Army Branch Insignia lapel pin, round gold colored non-ferrous metal pin featuring the initials "U. S."
(c) Field Artillery Branch Insignia lapel pin, round gold colored non-ferrous metal pin featuring two crossed field guns.
(d) World War II Victory Military Ribbon bar pin, is 1 3/8 inches ribbon consisting of the following stripes: 3/8 inch double rainbow in juxtaposition (blues, greens, yellows, reds (center), yellows greens and blues); 1/32 inch White 67101; center 9/16 inch Old Glory Red 67156; 1/32 inch White; and 3/8 inch double rainbow in juxtaposition.
(e) Army Good Conduct Military Ribbon bar pin, 1 3/8 inches ribbon consisting of the following stripes: 1/16 inch Soldier Red 67157; 1/16 inch White 67101; 1/16 inch Soldier Red; 1/16 inch White; 1/16 inch Soldier Red; 1/16 inch White; center 5/8 inch Soldier Red; 1/16 inch White; 1/16 inch Soldier Red; 1/16 inch White; 1/16 inch Soldier Red; 1/16 inch White; and 1/16 inch Soldier Red.
(f) Double bar pin with the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Military Ribbon and World War II American Campaign Military Ribbon. The European-African Middle Eastern Campaign portion of the ribbon features 4 stars and is 1 3/8 inches wide and consists of the following stripes: 3/16 inch Brown 67136; 1/16 inch Irish Green 67189; 1/16 inch White 67101; 1/16 inch Scarlet 67111; inch Irish Green; center 1/8 inch triparted Old Glory Blue 67178, White and Scarlet; inch Irish Green; 1/16 inch White; 1/16 inch Black 67138; 1/16 inch White; and 3/16 inch Brown.The American Campaign portion of the ribbon is 1 3/8 inches wide and consists of the following stripes: 3/16 inch Oriental Blue 67172; 1/16 inch White 67101; 1/16 inch Black 67138; 1/16 inch Scarlet 67111; 1/16 inch White; 3/16 inch Oriental Blue; center 1/8 triparted Old Glory Blue 67178, White and Scarlet; 3/16 inch Oriental Blue; 1/16 inch White; 1/16 inch Scarlet; 1/16 inch Black; 1/16 inch White; and 3/16 inch Oriental Blue.
(g) Khaki colored long sleeve button up shirt with brown plastic buttons and an embroidered tag (see marks) at the interior upper center back. There are buttoned-down shoulder straps on each shoulder.
(h) Khaki colored tie.
(i) The pants are U.S. Army Specification PQD 353B Trousers manufactured by the International Tailoring Co. from 18 oz. serge wool in Olive Drab 33. The trousers feature a button fly closure, gas flap behind front fly, button hole closure on left rear pocket, and suspender buttons on inside waistband.
