DescriptionCampaign banner for the North-Stamford Democratic Union Club, c. 1856-1864. Painted light canvas banner inscribed "North-Stamford Democratic Union Club" and emblazoned with an adapted depiction of the Coat of Arms of the United States. A bald eagle with wings outstretched holds a scroll in its beak reading “North South” rather than the traditional “E. Pluribus Unum.” From the eagle's perspective, it holds a bundle of 13 arrows in its left talon, and an olive branch in its right talon. At the eagle’s breast is the traditional escutcheon of the Coat of Arms of the United States, a shield painted in a red, white, and blue motif. Banner has silk rosettes attached to the upper right and left corner, a scalloped silk border, and is attached to wooden rods at top and bottom (partially detached at top). Paint colors include red, blue, black, green, and yellow.
