DescriptionFive children gather flowers on a steep hill. In the center, a young girl holds a tree limb in her left hand and passes a bouquet of flowers, presumably primroses, to a smaller girl at the left. Both girls wear short dresses belted at the waist. The second girl reaches up with both hands to receive the bouquet. A third girl, wearing a hat, gathers flowers from a grassy slope in the right foreground. A fourth child, apparently a boy, kneels at the far left. He appears to be putting nosegays or flowers into a shallow basket or Sussex trug. A bonnet lies on the ground at the left. At the far right, a fifth child is seated at the foot of a large tree. Additional trees are in the right background and on the side of a ravine that slopes towards the sea. Two smaller trees are at the left. A flock of sheep are visible between them on a hill in the left background.
