DescriptionElongated, hexagonal, ironstone lidded vegetable dish with a transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue pattern and border. The vegetable dish (.a) sits on a raised foot and has a wide, concave, rim where the domed lid (.b) sits. The vegetable dish also has two handles, part of the body of the vegetable dish, each shaped like a curvy arrow. The pattern, titled, "Tessino" and found on the bottom of the inside of the vegetable dish, shows a woman, girl, and boy on a high outcropping of land that overlooks a body of water and two structures. The woman and girl are standing up and looking to the left, where the boy sits on a rock. A small castle, possibly a game or toy, sits on the rock next to the boy. To the right, ruins and a tree sit on a hill that slopes down to water, possibly a lake. At left, in the distance, an Italian structure sits on the edge of the water. The border is found at the rim of the vegetable dish surrounding the pattern, as well as on the outside, the foot, and the lid of the vegetable dish, although in different proportions. The border consists of several lines of blue rectangles, with two smaller rectangles inside, lined up like bricks. The border is surrounded at one side, the outer edge of the rim, by a straight white vine with leaves periodically draped across, and with scrolls and leaves on the inside edge of the rim. Periodically, the entire border is interrupted by a cluster of blue flowers and some geometric shapes, possibly fruit, over the lines of rectangles. The lid has a hexagonal finial applied to the top, which is decorated with same rectangle border found elsewhere on the vegetable dish. Both the lid and the vegetable dish have light crazing over all surfaces. The vegetable dish has two chips on the underside of the rim, on opposite protruding corners.

MarkingsThere are three marks on the bottom of the vegetable dish. The first is a faintly impressed British registry mark in the shape of a diamond with a circle at the top; any further notations are unreadable. The second is an underglaze blue, printed maker's mark with "IRONSTONE" over a phoenix with outstretched wings, over the pattern name, "'TESSINO'/ J. Clementson", with an imitation of the diamond-shaped British registry mark, described above. The following marks are inside the diamond and circle: "IV inside the circle, "I" at the top of the diamond, "2" at the right side of the diamond; "2" at the bottom of the diamond; and "Rd" in the middle. The third mark is an underglaze blue, printed number "86" or "88".On View
