DescriptionTombstone style hatplate made of japanned and painted tin, of the 3rd Company, 31st Regiment of, possibly, the Connecticut militia. The hatplate is painted in yellow and red, but the colors are heavily obscured by the accumulation of dirt. The hatplate has a red edging, which has five 1/16-inch-diameter holes, spaced approximately five inches apart along the outer edge of the plate. These hole are for attachment to a hat. The face of the plate is ornamented with a federal eagle and shield. The shield has stripes in red paint. Below the eagle is the two-line legend, "3d. COMP./ 31st. REGT".

InscribedOn the back of the hatplate, an inscription has been scratched in. It reads, "[illegible]/ Theodore Pease, 410 3/8". At right angles to that is scratched, "X 12".On View
