DescriptionTombstone-style militia hatplate of japanned, gilt, and painted tin plate. The hatplate appears to have been lined on the back with paper. The design on the front consists of a red painted edging around the curved top portion of the hatplate. The top of the plate is decorated with an eagle and shield in gilt, with feather details in black paint and a shield delineated in black paint and red paint stripes. Below the eagle is a two-line legend in gold, "6th. COMPY./ 1st. REGT." (The Y and the T at the end of each word are underlined superscript.) There are a pair of holes on either side near the edge of the hatplate. Each pair of holes are 4 3/4 inches apart. The holes were used to fasten the hatplate to a hat by means of tape or ribbon ties.
