DescriptionTriangular-shaped militia hatplate made of tinned iron (also called sheet tin). There is one metal tab soldered to each rear corner. Projecting from the tabs are fragments of iron wire, originally used to affix the plate to a hat. The hatplate is bent in a crescent shape and was intended for wear on a civilian, felt top hat.

The front of the hatplate consists of a black painted ground with a 1/4-inch-wide, red painted border all around. A spread eagle and shield is painted in the center of the ground. The eagle grasps a drum and panoply of arms. The eagle is painted in shades of brown, with and the shield has red and white stripes. The drum is rendered in shades of brown and red, as is the panoply of arms.
