NotesSubject Note: The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation based in southeastern Connecticut operates a multi-faceted entertainment enterprise that includes a casino, hotels, restaurants, and theaters; there are also real estate and other businesses owned by the Nation. The Nation has also established a renowned art and history museum with an excellent indigenous collection and library. Tribal lands include many facilities and services for members, as well as ecological areas and a farm. Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation holds an intertribal powwow annually. Called Schemitzun, the gathering celebrates the seasonal abundance of Green Corn. Over the years this has taken place at different locations including the Hartford Civic Center in the early 1990s, and later at a variety of places on the reservation. These social gatherings feature traditional dance presentations and competitions, arts and crafts displays and sales by Native artists from all over the US, traditional foods, and music presented by invited singers and drum groups from all across Native America. The festival honors ancestors, veterans, and elders. The annual powwow is managed by the Nation’s Cultural Resource Department and Foxwoods Casino and is open to the public.Additional materials exist in the CCHAP archive for this community.
