NotesSubject Note: The Connecticut Assyrian community – Christians from Iran and Iraq – have settled in New Britain, CT establishing a strong community with a church and a cultural center. Members of the community hold an annual festival at their church in New Britain, St. Thomas Assyrian Church of the East. The event features food for sale, crafts, and music. Assyrians speak a language similar to ancient Aramaic, and trace descent from the Babylonians of Mesopotamia. Textile artist Florence BetGeorge lived in New Britain for many years and participated in several CCHAP exhibits and activities such as the Sewing Circle Project, and she donated two items to the CHS collection (2015.217.0; 2015.232.0). Her granddaughter Maegan BetEnvia produced a book, The Assyrians of New Britain (Arcadia Publishing, Images of America Series, 2007), based on oral histories with community members.Additional audio, video, and/or photographic materials exist in the archive relating to these events and artists.
