DescriptionFramed document transcribing [incorrectly] the inscription from the back of needlework 2003.8.1a,b. It is written in black ink in calligraphic letters on ivory paper. The transcription reads:
"The inscription on the reverse of this/ piece of embroidery reads:/ 1700/ For/ Mrs Martha Hubbard/ In/ Her Home New London/ This piece was wrought by/ Elizabeth Gore in England [before 1630],/ who after She arrived in New England/ marryed [sic] one Gager. She was Great/ Grandmother to Lydia Coit. She came/ from England 'in ye time of ye persecution'/ Mrs. Martha Hubbard's maiden name was/ Coit. She lived in Boston. Lydia Coit/ married William Hubbard./ It was given to Lydia Coit Kingsley; then/ to her son William S. Kingsley, of New/ Haven; and is now owned by his daughter/ Elizabeth Kingsley Farnam."
The document is covered in glass; the back is covered with brown paper. Two brass hooks are screwed into the top edge of the frame for hanging.
