DescriptionA woman, two men, a boy, a young child, and an infant are in the interior of a room, apparently a parlor. The woman is seated at the left. She wears a dress and jewelry, including a brooch and earrings. She is sewing. A baby in a wicker cradle and a striped cat are nearby. The man and the boy are seated at a round or oval table covered with a table cloth. The man wears what appears to be a paisley patterned dressing gown over a vest, shirt, stock, necktie, and trousers. He has sideburns. A young child, probably a girl, leans on his leg. The child is wearing a dress and pantaloons with eyelet trim. A bowl of fruit, a pitcher, and a glass are on the table. The second man stands at the right, with his left hand resting on a chair. He wears a frock coat, vest, shirt, stock, necktie, and trousers. A spotted dog lies on the patterned carpet in the foreground. Two books and an oil or kerosene lamp are on the mantle of a marbled fireplace. A framed oil painting depicting a seascape, with a small pulling boat, possibly a whaling scene, hangs on the wall, which is covered with striped wallpaper. Drapery with a ruffled valance is at the far right.
